Using Compost Products - PAS100 Standard and Golf Course Maintenance

PAS100: 2005 and Quality Protocol
Certification logo

If you are looking for top quality compost, top dressing, soil conditioner or mulch then you can be sure that when you see the certification mark the material is produced to a high standard.

Publicly available specification for composted materials 100: 2005 is a recognised standard for compost. It is certified by the Composting Association and in Scotland compost meeting the PAS100 standard is considered a product. In England and Wales the Quality Protocol is also required.

WamCal are approved PAS100 and Quality Protocol consultants and can help you achieve certification by:

  • Visiting your site and reviewing your process
  • Advising on requirements for PAS100
  • Giving guidance on recording documents
  • Assisting with developing a Quality Policy, Standard Operating procedures and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control point plans (HACCP)

Using Compost on Golf Courses

In collaboration with WRAP, WamCal has completed trials of compost on selected areas of Monifieth Golf Links (a leading Angus golf facility and a venue for final qualifying for the 2007 Open Championship). This trial aims to raise awareness amongst greenkeepers of the key benefits that compost can deliver when applied as a top dressing to turf in the high value sports turf sector.

These benefits include:

  • Improved turf health through balanced supply of macro and micro nutrients
  • Disease suppression through increased beneficial microbial activity
  • Reduced compaction through improved soil structure and aeration
  • Improved water holding capacity

During the trial 60 tonnes of 10mm screened compost in a one year trial period (4 applications of 15 tonnes) were used on:

  • Practice green
  • Practice teeing area
  • 2 trial tees (compared with 2 tees trialled with conventional product)

Results from the trial have been summarised in a report that was submitted to WRAP in September 2007
