Developed by technical experts at DEFRA and CIWM the VRQs focus on Waste Treatment Technologies.

Level 3 - Principles and Practices of Sustainable Waste Management

The level 3 course focuses on the Principles and Practices of Sustainable Wastes Management. It is aimed at process engineers and technicians, together with other professionals, who are looking to transfer into the waste industry.

The course consists of 6 taught units and a work or theory based project. Each of the units covers a different aspect of waste:

  1. Principles of Sustainability and its impact on waste management
  2. Waste generation in the UK
  3. Waste management policy and legislation
  4. Roles and responsibilities of stakeholders involved in waste management
  5. Technical aspects of waste management
  6. Health and safety in the waste management industry

The course will be delivered on a day-release basis, likely to run over 5 weekly or fortnightly sessions and is also interspersed with site visits and course exercises. The final session includes an exam, to confirm the student has reached the required level of understanding. The student is also expected to complete a workplace-based assignment over a period of 3 months, which will culminate in a project report.

Level 4 - Waste Treatment Techologies

The level 4 course in Waste Treatment Technologies is aimed at providing professionals within the waste industry with a detailed understanding of the practical aspects of advanced waste treatment processes. The course consists of 5 taught units and a work or theory based project. Each of the units covers a different aspect of waste:

  1. Historical, social and legal context for sustainable waste management
  2. Physical waste management technologies
  3. Biological waste treatment technologies
  4. Advanced thermal waste treatment technologies
  5. Integrated treatment technologies for waste management

This course will also be delivered on a day-release basis over 5 weekly or fortnightly sessions. Site visits and course exercises will also be included. The final session includes an exam to confirm the student has reached the required level. The student will also complete a workplace-based assignment over 3 months, culminating in a project report.
