About WamCal

Alistair Lamont MBE, President (2004/05) of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management is the Managing Director of WamCal Ltd and a member of the board of Institution of Wastes Management Business Services Ltd. He is the principal consultant for WamCal Ltd and is also principal assessor and internal verifier for SVQ levels 1-4 and WAMITAB awards. He was Engineering Services Manager with Dundee City Council from 1974-97 and amongst his achievements was the introduction of the wheeled bin kerbside recycling for paper and for compost and he initiated the Discovery Composting scheme which pioneered the use of composting to deal with biodegradable waste. Alistair is currently treasurer of the Composting Association: Scotland and treasurer of the Cross Party Group in the Scottish Parliament on Wastes Management. He was awarded a MBE in June 2004 for services to sustainable waste management.

Darcy Bertie is the Education & Training and Office Manager for WamCal Ltd and is an affiliate member of the CIWM. She is main point of contact in the office and is Centre Co-ordinator for the WAMITAB Caledonian Regional Centre, liaising with WAMITAB and SQA. Darcy recently gained a qualification for the integration of adult language, literacy and numeracy into the workplace (ISWP). In collaboration with South Bank University, Darcy and WAMITAB are currently involved in the delivery of the ISWP qualification to assessors in the waste and resource industry.

Jenny Grant is Business Development Manager for WamCal Ltd. Jenny is involved with the consultancy side of the business particularly composting, training course development and promotion of the Waste Awareness Certificate. She is the co-ordinator for the Association for Organics Recycling: Scotland and the Secretary of the Cross Party Group in the Scottish Parliament on Wastes Management. Jenny has a BSc (hons) in Molecular Microbiology and is a member of the CIWM.

Alastair Rogers is Project Leader within WamCal Ltd. He works within the consultancy side of the business, specifically with regard to PPC Permit applications and Waste Management Licence applications. As Project Leader, he is responsible for ensuring that project tasks are completed effectively and within set time periods. He has a BSc (Hons) degree in Environmental Management, an MRes in Civil (Environmental) Engineering. He is a graduate member of the CIWM.

Adrian Parker is a Knowledge Transfer Partnership Associate with Abertay University and WamCal. His project is to develop novel techniques and testing methods within the field of Animal By-Product composting. He has an MSc in Environmental Monitoring and Assessment; BSc in Environmental Science. He is also undertaking a PhD in the field of composting at University of Abertay Dundee. Tom Ballantine has been an assessor for WAMITAB since 1996. He retired from Local Authority in 1999 when he become a peripatetic assessor for WamCal Ltd where he undertakes all levels/types of awards. Tom is also qualified as an internal verifier. He has been a member of the CIWM since 1987. His professional background was within the marine/mechanical production engineering areas prior to entering the waste management industry in 1979 when he became incineration manager for Renfrewshire District Council. During this time, he managed the incinerator, transfer station, treatment facilities, CA sites and landfill site together with district transport functions. In 1996 he was employed by Glasgow District Council as an operations manager for a new state of the art transfer station.

Neil Rhind is an assessor for WamCal Ltd and since training as an assessor for COTCs in 1995 he has assessed over 450 awards. He is registered to assess the complete range of COTC and CoC qualifications. In addition, Neil holds the Internal Verifiers qualification. Neil has been in the waste industry for many years from initial training, until retiring as Director of Environmental Services, gaining wide experience ranging from domestic and industrial waste, sewage sludge, military waste that sometimes went bang, to whisky distillery effluent.

Alan Boyne is a member of the CIWM and a peripatetic assessor for WamCal Ltd assessing Waste Management Candidates for COC, COTC and SVQ levels 1-4. Having spent 20 years in the Waste Industry he has had wide-ranging practical, management and administration experience in marine engineering and waste management fields.  His work experience has progressed from Seagoing Engineer to Marine Consultant to Contract and Client Waste Manager in Refuse Collection, Street Cleansing, Recycling and Waste Disposal.

Robert Ovens has 5 years experience as full time Assessor and Internal Verifier for WamCal Ltd. He has also worked for the SQA, as one of two External Verifier's in Scotland. Robert has 12 years experience in the waste management industry, which has included 7 years running a clinical waste transfer station. He is currently employed as a Health and Safety Officer, working in the Poultry Industry; and has over 10 years experience in all aspects of Health and Safety. Robert has been a member of CIWM since 1999, and a member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health since 2000, he is also a fully qualified trainer in all Health and Safety Topics.

Kenneth Douglas is a peripatetic assessor for COTC awards for WamCal Ltd. He has 24 years experience in waste management, having spent 21 years as a local authority senior manager responsible for waste management and three years as an independent consultant. Ken is a former chairman and current committee member of the Northern Ireland Centre of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management. He is the owner of Aquila Environmental (a waste management consultancy). His professional interests include training, composting and anaerobic digestion/renewable energy. His hobbies include DIY, motor sport, drinking wine and talking (about) rubbish.

Ian Paton is a peripatetic assessor for WamCal Ltd assessing Waste Management Candidates for CoTc and SVQs and is a Member of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CminstWM), a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC) and a Chartered Chemist (CChem). He has over 15 years of experience within the waste management industry specialising in the treatment and composting of biodegradable waste from a variety of sources. He has a great deal of experience developing quality control schemes, Hazard Anaylsis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems, composting of animal by-products and has developed and implemented The Composting Association Standard on compost.

Robin Draper is a peripatetic assessor for Wamcal Ltd. Based in Shrewsbury, Robin runs his own waste and environmental management consultancy, Draper Resources covering the Midlands Wales and the North West. Robin is a graduate, has a level 4 COTC and is a full member of the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management with 17 years experience in the waste industry, working in Environmental Regulation until 1997 and since then has specialised in waste minimisation and obtaining planning consents, waste management licenses and PPC permits.

Paul Stinton is an In-House Assessor and Internal Verifier for Shanks Waste Management Ltd who processes many of his candidates though WamCal. He has worked in the Hazardous Waste part of the company for over 14 years and is an associate member of the CIWM. He has over 5 years experience assessing and internally verifying COC, COTC and S/NVQ Levels 1-4.  He was involved, through Shanks Waste Management Ltd and WamCal, in the Pilot Level 2 awards and he also is involved in Risk Assessments and Competence based projects.  Aside from his busy work schedule, Paul finds time to enjoy touring the countryside on his motorcycles and enjoys the benefit of having a growing family!
