Adult Language, Literacy & Numeracy Training in the
Waste and Resource Recovery Industry in Scotland

Recent Government research has identified that there is a growing problem associated with Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills in the workplace. It is reported that this problem is impacting on the performance and profitability of organisations across all industries.

To ensure that the Waste Industry is able to satisfy this critical development need WamCal is working with WAMITAB to deliver teaching qualifications to workplace trainers and assessors. Our Education & Training Manager, Darcy Bertie has gained a level 3 Support Tutor qualification and is now working towards a level 4 teaching qualification; she is also working with the London South Bank University Teacher Training Department (LLU+) on a WAMITAB funded pilot project to provide level 3 support teacher qualifications to WAMITAB centre staff and assessors from across the whole of the UK.

This programme will enable successful candidates to provide Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills teaching with the support of appropriately qualified subject specialists approved by WAMITAB. Training programmes are being developed for delivery to the growing number of employees in the industry from overseas who may need some tutoring in the English language.

Highlands and Island Enterprise - Funded Training Project

WamCal, in partnership with the Energy and Utilities Skills Sector Skills Council and WAMITAB, ran a pilot project to deliver Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills embedded in Level 2 Waste Management Qualifications to a small number of employees from both the private and public sector working in the Highlands and Islands region. The project also delivered the CIWM Waste Awareness Course to a larger number of candidates at the final training session. The programme was structured to provide classroom tutoring and self paced study using workbooks that were completed in the candidates' own time. This minimised the amount of time that the candidates were away from the workplace and maximised the contact time available between the tutors and the candidates.

The project commenced in late October 2006 and was completed by February 2007.

Further details of these projects can be obtained by contacting Darcy. Click here to submit an enquiry
